Who is an Election Day Poll Worker?
If you have been to the polls on Election Day, you have seen your neighbors working and may have wondered how you could become a Poll Worker. There are more than 5,000 Poll Worker in Miami-Dade County who are appointed by the Supervisor of Elections to ensure the conduct of fair and accurate elections. This web page explains how you can become a Poll Worker in Miami-Dade.
What are the steps in becoming a Poll Worker?
You must be a registered voter in Miami-Dade County and able to read and write English. You will be required to be trained as a Poll Worker.
What are the different Poll Worker Positions?
The Clerk is in charge of all operations at the precinct, and has added responsibilities prior to election day, such as contacting all the Poll Workers in that precinct, picking up the supplies before Election Day, inspecting the polling place and returning the ballots. The Assistant Clerk assists with the Clerk's duties, and may act as the Clerk if required. The Inspector processes the voters, gives voting demonstrations, issues the ballot, and ensures that the voter votes properly. The Deputy maintains law and order outside the voting area.
Do I get paid for being a Poll Worker?
Yes.
What type of training is required to be a Poll Worker?
All Poll Workers are required to be trained prior to elections. The training is usually held a month prior to election day. Any Poll Worker not trained before an election is not eligible to work.
If I have previously worked at the polls, do I need to reapply for each election cycle?
Once you have worked at the polls on election day, your record will remain active and you do not have to apply again. If you want to determine whether you are still on the active Poll Worker file, call our office at 305-499-8448.
How will I know where I will work?
We try to schedule all Poll Workers to work in their home precinct if possible. If your home precinct is full, you will be assigned to work in another nearby precinct.
If I do not work in my home precinct, how do I vote?
Poll Workers working outside of their home precinct should request an Absentee Ballot and return the voted Absentee Ballot to our office before election day.
What are the working hours?
The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. All Poll Workers must be at their assigned polling place at 6 a.m. on election morning. The day ends for Inspectors and the Deputy when all ballots have been accounted for and all materials have been packed away. The Clerk and Assistant Clerk must transport the voted ballots to a collection center. Poll Workers are not permitted to leave their assigned polling place on election day.
