(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Until today, election results posted on the Miami-Dade Elections Department website were unofficial pending the tabulation of absentee ballots received on Election Day. Today at 2 p.m., not only will the final, official results for all races and questions be released on the website, but the election will be certified and sent to the Florida State Division of Elections.
Certification of an election means that the Elections Department has finished counting all ballots and that the number of persons who voted have been compared to the number of votes counted. Florida counties have until 5pm on the 7th day following a Primary to certify an election. In this case, that is next Tuesday, September 2nd. However, elections officials have worked diligently to complete this process and bring this election to a close just in time for the Labor Day weekend.
As standard practice in the elections field, absentee and provisional ballots received on the day of the election are not counted until after Election Night to ensure that voters do not vote by absentee and at their precinct on Election Day.
"The most important elections are those containing local races and questions because those have the biggest impact on our daily lives," said Supervisor of Elections, Lester Sola, "so we were eager to finish counting votes and release the official results to our voters via our website."
