Early Voters Turnout in Record Numbers

Miami-Dade Elections Enhances 3-1-1 And Website Services

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
The first two days of Early Voting in Miami-Dade County resulted in 25,388 voters already casting their ballot – this is compared to 22,338 in November 2004. In an effort to make eager voters as comfortable as possible, poll workers are distributing water and fans to all voters; and chairs for the elderly and people with disabilities.

To further serve voters, the Elections Department will begin posting approximate wait times at all 20 Early Voting sites online at www.miamidade.gov/elections throughout the day. This information will also be available by calling 3-1-1. Voters are encouraged to use one of these resources before heading to the polls, so they know what to expect. Voters can rest assured that as long as they are in line by the time polls close, they will be guaranteed their right to vote.

In addition, extra electronic check-in equipment has been deployed, with an additional 25 on the way, which will be systematically deployed throughout the coming days.

"We are taking every possible measure to make voting a pleasant experience. We want to encourage every voter to take advantage of this opportunity; we just ask that voters remain patient. We are making every effort to ensure the process is as convenient and comfortable as possible, considering the record turnout," said Supervisor of Elections Lester Sola.

Voters are asked to bring identification that contains both a photo and a signature; and are also encouraged to review the ballot before going to vote. Sample ballots are available on the Elections web site.

Voters also have the option to vote via absentee ballot from the comfort of their home. Any person eligible to vote in this election can request an absentee ballot. Requests to receive an absentee ballot by mail must be made by October 29, 2008.

For additional information on Early or Absentee Voting, please visit the Miami-Dade Election Ready website at www.miamidade.gov/elections or call 3-1-1.
