(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- Not even the rain kept voters away from early voting locations this weekend. By the end of the day Sunday, a total of 31,243 voters cast ballots at early voting sites and 6,728 had returned absentee ballots over the weekend.
In total, 112,434 early voters have come out to vote, and 92,104 absentee ballots have been returned. This means Miami-Dade County is well on the way to a record turnout, which has been anticipated from the start of the election. In the November 2004 Presidential Election, 244,067 voters took advantage of early voting and 98,466 voted via absentee ballot.
"We are very pleased with the turnout of early voters so far," said Supervisor of Elections Lester Sola. "I also want to thank voters for their patience. It's refreshing to see voters turn out in the numbers we've seen and for the most part, happy to brave the lines and heat. I think they know they're making history. It's great to see such dedication to our democratic process."
For the second week of early voting, the Elections Department expects the momentum to continue. Historically, the second week is busier than the first. To continue making the experience as pleasant as possible, the Department will continue posting wait times on line and via the 3-1-1 Answer Center. Fans and water will continue to be distributed, as well as the availability of seats for the elderly, people with disabilities and expectant mothers. Voters are encouraged to call or go online for wait times at early voting sites before heading out.
Miami-Dade County voters have choices when it comes to voting. Early voters may cast their ballot at any one of 20 locations throughout the County until November 2. If voters want to vote via absentee ballot, the deadline to request one by mail is Wednesday, October 29 at 5 p.m. On Election Day, November 4, voters must go to their assigned precinct.
