Adult Basic Education

The purpose of the Adult General Education program is to provide basic literacy and life skills to adults who are performing at or below the ninth grade level. All students entering this program are required to take a basic skills exam for placement purposes. The program is designed for students who need to improve their skills in reading, writing, and/or mathematics.

Citizen's Police Academy (CPA)

The CPA targets active citizens who wish to learn about law enforcement training philosophies and strategies.  It is designed to broaden citizen understanding of why various enforcemnt techniques are employed. Each CPA consists of 14 weekly sessions, which last approximately 4 hours.

Computer Training

Instruction and training are provided in the use of personal computers as well as training to develop basic office skills. These services are provided to low-income individuals who have a desire to learn about computers or has an interest in entering the workforce in a computer related field. Skills learned through the program will facilitate advancement or immediate entry into the job market.

Connections: Library Service for the Homebound

Library Service for the Homebound provides books-by-mail service to individuals of all ages who are unable to visit the library in person due to chronic illness, physical disability and frailties of age. Special outreach programming services to facilities and groups who serve the elderly are also available.

Crime Prevention Community Presentations

MDPD provides presentations on several topics, ranging from personal safety, drug and alcohol use in the workplace, senior citizen safety, workplace violence, bank robbery prevention and simulation, internet safety and identity theft.  These presentations can be requested by organizations and private businesses throughout the County. Additional crime prevention tips can be received by scheduling a security survey for your home or business.  An officer will respond and identify security weaknesses and make recommendations on how to better protect your property.  These tips can help minimize the risk of being burglarized.

"Don't Let Alcohol Be Your Last Taste Of Life"

The Miami-Dade Police Department initiated this unique proactive educational program in Miami-Dade County high schools to inform students about the consequences of their actions.  Currently, this program is taught by 4 Officers in 27 high schools.  The program allows students to hear presentations on bullying, the dangers of drinking and driving, the dangers of texting and driving, date rape, substance abuse, etc. Additional activities pertaining to the program are Mock Crashes, Ghost Outs, the Youth Summit and Poster Contest.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE)

DARE is a 10 week curriculum taught by certified police officers to 5th grade students, throughout Miami-Dade County, for the purpose of teaching positive alternatives to substance abuse and gang violence. The new curriculum, updated in 2012, also includes bullying, peer pressure and good decision making skills.

Greater Miami Service Corps

The Greater Miami Service Corps (GMSC) is a youth service organization that operates provides out-of-school young people with the resources and services necessary to transition to independence and self-sufficiency.   Program emphasis is placed on preparing young people to enter the workforce through education, work experience, internship, job placement and post-program follow-up to placement retention.

Jump Start

Jump Start is a “storytime kit program to go” for all licensed preschool and kindergarten childcare centers.  The kits contain all the tools to present fun, high quality storytimes on a variety of themes.  Each kit includes books, fingerplays, a flannelboard story, a puppet and a music cassette tape or CD.

Mobile Library Services - Bookmobiles

Visit one of our two mobile libraries where you can borrow books, music, audio books and videos! Residents of Miami-Dade County who reside within the library taxing district are eligible. Stops are scheduled at public parks, childcare facilities, condominium complexes, retirement communities, senior centers and recreational facilities.

Library Services for Persons with Disabilities

Assistive Technologies are special services and assistive devices that help make it possible for a person with a visual, hearing or speech impairment to access materials, equipment and services. Available materials include books, periodicals, closed-captioned videos for persons who are hearing impaired and descriptive videos for persons who are visually impaired. The on-line catalog may be searched by subject, title or keyword for items in all formats. All library computers come equipped with Microsoft Windows XP Accessibility Software. The Start menu contains the Microsoft Accessibility providing visual enhancement utilities.

Project L.E.A.D. (Literacy for Every Adult in Dade)

Project L.E.A.D. (Literacy for Every Adult in Dade) is an adult literacy program designed to reach out to English speaking adults who are functionally illiterate and have reading and writing skills that are inadequate to cope with the demands of everyday life. They have difficulty or are unable to fill out forms, read to their child or read the instructions on medicine bottles.  Project L.E.A.D. provides free, one-on-one, confidential tutoring to help improve their reading and writing skills. We match adult learners with volunteer tutors who help them achieve self-determined literacy goals.

Safe Start

The Miami Safe Start Initiative is a community collaboration project to provide services to children exposed to violence. This project focuses on collaborative programming and front-line service integration. The Early Head Start Program, provides comprehensive child development services to children ages 0 to 3 from families who have been referred from the Justice System. The program provides comprehensive child development services to children and families exposed to violence and referred by the courts. Intervention services to families include parent-child therapy and intensive case management services.

Scholarship Program

The Community Advisory Committees award an annual scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to an individual from their target area who is currently enrolled in a college or vocational program, or has plans to attend college or a vocational school.This scholarship initiative was developed to provide financial support to assist individuals from the communities served by the CAC an opportunity to attain their educational goals. The scholarship is open to individuals between the ages of 16-25 years old.

Talking Books Library

The Talking Books Library loans Braille and audio books and magazines, along with a player, FREE by mail to persons who have difficulty reading or using printed books and other materials because of blindness, or visual, physical, or reading disabilities.

Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten

The Voluntary Pre-kindergarten program is designed to prepare Florida's children for kindergarten and develop the skills they need to become good readers and successful students. It includes standards for literacy skills, strict accountability, appropriate curricula, substantial instruction periods, manageable class sizes and qualified instructors. Parents have the option of enrolling children in a school-year program consisting of 540 instructional hours or a summer program consisting of 300 instructional hours.
