Four Miami-Dade County departments team up to offer residents free trees, pet adoptions, showerheads and energy efficient light bulbs on Sunday, September 14, 2014

(MIAMI, September 10, 2014) – Miami-Dade County Animal Services and Water and Sewer Departments; as well as, the Division of Environmental Resources Management’s Adopt-a-Tree program and the Office of Sustainability are teaming up to offer FREE trees, FREE pet adoptions, FREE water efficient showerheads, FREE energy efficient light bulbs and the opportunity to properly dispose of old electronics on Sunday, September 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at Miami Dade College North Campus, 11380 NW 27th Avenue, Miami.

What do pets, trees, water efficient showerheads, energy efficient light bulbs and recycling have in common?  They all offer benefits that help make our lives a bit better.  Shelter pets offer emotional and health benefits as well as a lifetime of unconditional love and friendship.  Trees help keep our air clean and our homes cool.  Water efficient showerheads and energy efficient light bulbs help us save money and proper disposal of electronics helps keep our environment safe.

Below are brief descriptions of event offerings:

Animal Services Pet Adoptions
The Animal Services HOPE Express Mobile Pet Adoption Trailer will be on site with its precious furry cargo of adorable cats and dogs of all ages.  Pet adoptions include free spay/neuter, rabies vaccinations, deworming and microchipping.  Cats will be tested for FIV and FeLV.  The free pet adoptions for cats and kittens at event are made possible through the “R.O.A.R. (Reach Out. Act. Respond.) To Their Rescue” program grant provided by Animal Planet in collaboration with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to waive adoption fees for dogs and cat in Miami until each market reaches a $25,000 cap in fee waived adoptions.

Adopt-A-Tree
Those Miami-Dade County residents eligible to adopt FREE trees at this event can choose from a variety of tree species like Mango, Jackfruit, Sugar apple, Indian tamarind, Green buttonwood, and Pigeon plum.  Approximately 2,700 FREE trees will be available for adoption at this event, and experts will also be onsite to show participants how to properly plant and care for their new trees.  Trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis - while supplies last.

Showerhead Exchange Program
Additionally, the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department and the Miami-Dade County Office of Sustainability will be providing energy-efficient CFL bulbs and high efficiency showerheads to residents who bring their old showerheads to the event and/or their most heavily used regular light bulbs (while supplies last).

Electronic Recycling Center (ERC)
The ERC will be collecting old electronics, faxes, computers, keyboards printers, telephones, calculators, TV’s, VCR’s and other obsolete electronics for appropriate recycling.  Some old electronics can create environmental hazards if they are disposed of improperly.
