Miami-Dade Fire Rescue hosts turkey fryer safety demonstration

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) will be conducting a turkey fryer safety demonstration Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, at the MDFR Training Facility located at 9300 NW 41 St., Doral, Florida.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. In fact, the average number of reported residential building fires doubled on Thanksgiving. At least 67 percent of home cooking fires begin when food or cooking materials catch on fire. Although turkey fryers have become popular cooking equipment for holidays, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) discourages the use of turkey fryers except by properly trained professionals using professional quality equipment. Consumers should be aware of dangers and the proper way to use turkey fryers.

Firefighters will be demonstrating how improper use of turkey fryers can result in serious injuries and damage to property.

For more information, please contact the MDFR Public Affairs Bureau at 786-331-5200.

Media Note: The demonstration is being held exclusively for the media and will start promptly at 1:30 p.m.
