Miami-Dade Fire Rescue leading the way as one of the fire departments with the highest number of female firefighters in its force

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is proud to recognize its female first responders who put their lives on the line, day in and day out, to serve our community. MDFR celebrates these extraordinary women in the fire service by holding a photo shoot that will be included in the MDFR 2020 Yearbook to honor their dedication and commitment.

Widely considered one of the leading fire rescue departments in the country, MDFR currently employs a total of 236 female firefighters ranking from firefighter to division chief, leading the way as one of the fire departments with the highest number of women in its force – an accomplishment that has been almost 40 years in the making, since hiring the first female firefighter in 1980.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were approximately 1,056,200 firefighters in the U.S. in 2017. Out of the total number of firefighters, only 77,900 (7%) were female firefighters.
