Kick off 2020 with a bang!

(MIAMI, Dec. 30, 2019) – A new decade is upon us, so are the safety precautions everyone should keep in mind when setting off fireworks to ring in 2020. While fireworks are fun, they only stay that way when the party involved celebrates safely. The improper use of fireworks has the potential to cause fires, serious injuries and even death.

Each year, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treat an estimated 9,100 fireworks-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Most fireworks-related injuries are caused by sparklers, which can burn up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit and can melt some metals and glass. Additionally, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that an estimated 18,500 fires are started by fireworks, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires. These fires resulted in an estimated three reported civilian deaths, 40 civilian injuries and $43 million in direct property damage.

Welcome 2020 safely by following these safety precautions when handling fireworks this New Year’s Eve:

  • Always buy fireworks from approved vendors. Make sure to read and follow manufacturer’s safety instructions.
  • Never buy used or illegal fireworks. Anything that propels itself through the air, detonates or explodes is illegal in Miami-Dade County and is very dangerous.
  • Light fireworks outdoors, on a driveway or other paved surface, at least 25 feet away from houses, vehicles, trees and other combustible materials.
  • Never aim or shoot fireworks at animals, people or into crowds.
  • Light one firework at a time and remain a safe distance from the device.
  • Wear safety goggles to protect the eyes from flying debris or sparks.
  • Never ignite fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • Never attempt to re-ignite “duds” or fireworks that did not work the first time.
  • Always keep a close eye on children at events where fireworks are used.
  • Children under the age of 10 should be supervised when handling sparklers and fireworks, as they can cause severe burns and eye injuries.
  • STOP, DROP and ROLL: If clothes catch fire, remember to STOP, DROP onto the ground, cover your face, and ROLL over and over until the fire goes out.
  • Enjoy fireworks safely by attending a public fireworks show put on by trained professionals.
  • Prevent a trash fire by soaking used fireworks in a pail of water before throwing them in the trash.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose or water bucket nearby at all times in case of an emergency.
  • Ring in the new year with moderation. Adults consuming alcohol and handling fireworks are not a good combination. Make sure to stay hydrated with water.
  • Call 9-1-1 immediately in the event of a fire or burn emergency.
