Kick-start the school year safely amid COVID-19

(MIAMI, Aug. 20, 2021) – In order to increase back-to-school safety, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) reminds drivers and students to enjoy a safe first day of school and school year by observing important lifesaving, driving and health safety guidelines amid COVID-19.

Be sure to give yourself a few extra minutes for your morning commute and to keep these driving safety guidelines in mind:

  • STOP accelerating
  • DROP your speed to 15 mph
  • ROLL carefully through the school zone

As students and teachers step back into the classroom and in-person learning, MDFR wants to make sure everyone kick-starts the 2021-2022 school year safely by practicing the following safety guidelines to help stop the spread of COVID-19:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others.
  • Whenever possible, practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet from others.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily.
  • Remember that getting vaccinated is also vital to protecting ourselves and others from the spread of COVID-19.

As your child grows, teach children that they are responsible for their own safety and must be aware of their surroundings at all times. Part of returning to school safely also includes teaching and reminding our kids about the importance of following the safety guidelines they are given at school to help keep them safe from the spread of the virus.
