On November 14th, 2007 Miami-Dade County participated in a global event to educate millions of people on how geography makes a difference in our lives.
The event, entitled "GIS ... more than a destination" showcased our latest technology and provided insight on its everyday use for businesses, citizens and governments.
Nearly 300 students from ten Miami-Dade County middle schools participated in four presentations:
GPS technology and equipment demonstrated by the Department of Environmental Research Management (DERM)
How GIS is used in fire trucks given by the Fire Deparment
Miami-Dade GIS data on Google Earth by the Park and Recreation Department
Demo of the Land Information Viewer, an ArcGIS Server web application given by Water and Sewer.
A popular exhibit with students, employees and other visitors was our Map Gallery, which included maps from several departments. Students were also given a tour of the County Commission Chambers where they were greeted by the commissioners in attendance.
