FEMA proposes modified flood elevation determinations

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has proposed modified flood elevation determinations affecting the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIMR) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS)report for the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade County. You can read more in the letter of final determination.

Monitor the Swine Flu in Real-time with Google Maps

Created by a Biomedical Researcher based in Pittsburgh, the Swine Flu map plots real-time cases of confirmed and suspected cases of H1N1 Swine Flu as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). You can also keep track at their page.

Miami-Dade's Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security featured in new ESRI book

The Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security's preparation for Super Bowl XLI is one of the case studies featured in the newly released publication GIS for Homeland Security from ESRI Press. 2008 ESRI Conference Highlights

Attendees of the 2008 ESRI International User Conference gave a presentation of highlights to the Miami-Dade County GIS Users Group in the meeting held in September 2008. Topics included ArcGIS Explorer, what's new in ArcGIS 9.3 and plans for ArcGIS 9.4.

Miami-Dade's Public Works Department - “One Click from Photo to GIS” - Visual inventory of roadway assets

The Public Works Department of Miami-Dade County contracted eRoadInfo to setup and conduct an image based asset inventory and pavement management solution for the County. The solution consists of a mobile van equipped with five cameras, GPS, distance measuring device , pavement scanner and computer system to collect digital images along County roads. The solution is a GIS extension to ARCMap. The captured images will be processed to create a spatially registered asset database for Signs and Sidewalks. Subsequently, The GIS solution could be utilized by County forces to capture additional assets such as guardrails, trees, manholes, inlets, curb, gutter, street lights, fire hydrants, etc. If you can see it in the image it can be collected and entered into a GIS database at a fraction of the cost of traditional field crew deployments. This solution also provides an effective way of going back to verify the correctness and completeness of the data collected.
