PRESENTATION BY STAN HILL, FIREFIGHTERS UNION REGARDING THE RADIO SYSTEM

Mr. Stan Hill, Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue, made a video presentation on Miami-Dade County Fire and Rescue’s radio communication system, noting the system had failed and was deemed obsolete by the County in 1993. He requested that Miami-Dade County Fire and Rescue be allowed to break away from the services of ITD in order to control their own destiny and that they be allowed an emergency purchase order to update the system.
Chairperson Carey-Shuler’s requested this item to be reviewed by the Public Safety Committee.
In response to Chairperson Carey-Shuler’s request, Commissioner Heyman advised that this item was on the next Public Safety Committee Agenda to address the issue with ITD.
Commissioner Sorenson noted she had visited the Fire Department and had observed that the system did not work. She stressed that a working communication system should be a priority of this Commission.
Commissioner Sosa noted it would be wise for the County Manager to determine possible allocations before this item goes to committee.
On a point of personal privilege, Mr. Stan Hill congratulated Mr. Dominick Barbara on his retirement. While recognizing Mr. Barbara for his years of dedicated service with the Fire Department and as Union President, Mr. Hill recalled with the Board, a memorable event involving Mr. Barbara and the Miss America Beauty Pageant.
Chairperson Carey-Shuler stated she remembered very well the event involving Mr. Dominick Barbara and the Beauty Pageant and wished him well on his retirement.
