REPORT: Commissioner Sosa expressed concern regarding the legislature's rejection of $3.6 million in federal funds that could have been used for women's educational programs on heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, and feeding families. She noted there were many non-profit organizations in Miami-Dade County that could use these funds to help women. Commissioner Sorenson and Chairperson Rolle requested to be listed as co-sponsors of the foregoing resolution.

TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE GOVERNMENT TO ACCEPT THE FEDERAL FUNDING FOR WOMEN'S PROGRAMS

BODY
WHEREAS, the federal government has funds available for the State of Florida from various federal grants, some targeting women's issues; and
WHEREAS, recently, the State of Florida House of Representatives blocked the spending of more than $3.6 million in new federal funds for women's programs; and
WHEREAS, among the requests denied was the authority to spend $1 million from a federal grant to educate women on the dangers of heart disease and stroke; and
WHEREAS, another request that was denied was an additional $16,453 in unexpected federal funds to provide surplus federal food to women and children who are "nutritionally at risk"; and
WHEREAS, women’s health issues such as breast cancer need funding in order to do further research and assist those individuals who need care; and
WHEREAS, it is vitally important to our community and nation to provide education and, where necessary, food to women and children to protect their health and safety,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA that:
Section 1. This Board strongly urges the State of Florida House of Representatives to reconsider its decision to block free money and urges the House of Representatives to accept the federal grant money for women's programs.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to send certified copies of this Resolution to the members of the Miami-Dade County Delegation to the Florida Legislature.
