REPORT: Chairperson Martinez opened the public hearing on the foregoing item. Captain Stanley Hills, Miami-Dade County Fire and Rescue, appeared before the committee and pointed out a scrivener's error on the foregoing proposed resolution. He noted the address on the resolution was the headquarters address, and should be the address of the Miami-Dade County Fire and Rescue Maintenance Facility. Captain Hills noted that Lieutenant Arias had served the public for over 30 years with great distinction, and expressed his gratitude for the tribute to Lieutenant Arias. The committee by motion duly made, seconded and carried forwarded the foregoing proposed resolution to the Board of County Commissioners with a favorable recommendation as amended to reflect the correct address of the James J. Arias Maintenance Facility.

TITLE
RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY FIRE AND RESCUE MAINTENANCE FACILITY AS THE JAMES J. ARIAS MAINTENANCE FACILITY

BODY
WHEREAS, Lieutenant James J. Arias served Miami-Dade County with honor and distinction for 38 years; and
WHEREAS, James J. Arias was promoted to Lieutenant in 1964 and retired in May 1994; and
WHEREAS, James J. Arias worked as a firefighter at Station 2 in Liberty City and was described as "one hell of a firefighter" by other firefighters routinely fighting fires using higher than normal nozzle pressures and was mechanically gifted; and
WHEREAS, in 1964 Lieutenant Arias was asked to organize and set up the Fire Department vehicle maintenance program and was the first support officer for the Department; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Arias was never known to say a cross word to anyone, maintaining a friendly customer service attitude years before it was fashionable and led by example and served as a role model for fire officers for decades; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Arias worked with the Department to develop the "War Wagon" which was a predecessor to the Department's modern Technical Rescue Program; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Arias served on Miami-Dade's First International Response in 1985 to Mexico City where a newborn infant, Juana Arias, was rescued from the rubble; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue now operates its own shop and maintains its own fleet and James J. Arias passed away on February 1, 2003; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-1 of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Rule 9.02, this Board has the authority to designate County facilities; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners, in recognition of Lieutenant James J. Arias' pioneering efforts, unparalleled advocacy and steadfast commitment to the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Services, wishes to designate the Maintenance Facility located at 6100 S.W. 87th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33173-1623, as the James J. Arias Maintenance Facility,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board of County Commissioners hereby agrees to designate the Maintenance Facility at the Miami-Dade County Fire and Rescue located at 6100 S.W. 87th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33173-1623, as the James J. Arias Maintenance Facility.
