TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO SUPPORT FUNDING FOR MILITARY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS LOCATED IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

BODY
WHEREAS, Governor Bush has convened Special Session E of the Florida Legislative for the purpose of creating economic development strategies in a variety of areas; and
WHEREAS, infrastructure for preservation of Florida’s military installations has been identified as one of the areas of concern for Special Session E; and
WHEREAS, United Southern Command and the Homestead Air Reserve Base are significant contributors to the military industry located in Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County’s military industry provides over $1.2 billion annually of economic impact to the local economy; and
WHEREAS, the Miami-Dade Defense Alliance has identified infrastructure projects that contribute to the preservation of United States Southern Command and Homestead Air Reserve Base,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board urges the Florida Legislature to provide funding for the following projects:
1. Development of Miami-West Park to provide recreational facilities for United States Southern Command ($150,000)

2. Security buffer development for United States Southern Command ($75,000)

3. Demolition of unsafe structures located adjacent to Homestead Air Reserve Base ($150,000)

4. Site survey for the surplus property adjacent to the Homestead Air Reserve Base ($75,000)

5. Execution of studies required under the record of decision to transfer the surplus property adjacent to the Homestead Air Reserve Base to Miami-Dade County ($125,000)

6. Elimination of encroachment near Homestead Air Reserve Base through purchase and demolition of 16 residential units located in the South accident potential zone ($2,550,000)

7. Prevent encroachment near Homestead Air Reserve Base through purchase of property or property rights (approx. 8 acres) located in the North Clear Zone ($250,000)

8. Infrastructure for the BXMART at Homestead Air Reserve Base ($100,000)


Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, and the Chair and members of the Miami- Dade County State Legislative Delegation.
