TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE, THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER AND THE SECRETARY OF STATE TO SUPPORT THE PRESERVATION, RESTORATION AND RECOGNITION OF HISTORICALLY BLACK CEMETERIES

BODY
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has a number of historically-black cemeteries located throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, these cemeteries are the final resting places of many of Florida’s earliest black pioneers; and
WHEREAS, these cemeteries are an important part of the State of Florida’s history; and
WHEREAS, despite their historical significance, some of these cemeteries have fallen into disrepair over the years; and
WHEREAS, one such cemetery is the Silvergreen Cemetery, located west of U.S. 1 in South Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the Silvergreen Cemetery dates back to 1905 and was for many years the only black cemetery in the area; and
WHEREAS, many of Miami-Dade County’s early black pioneers are buried in the Silvergreen Cemetery; and
WHEREAS, cemeteries in the State of Florida are regulated by Chapter 497, Florida Statutes, and by the Florida Department of Financial Services, which is headed by the state’s Chief Financial Officer; and
WHEREAS, historic preservation in the State of Florida is overseen by the Secretary of State,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board urges the Florida Legislature, the Chief Financial Officer, and the Secretary of State to support the preservation, restoration and recognition of historically black cemeteries in the State of Florida, such as Silvergreen Cemetery, located west of U.S. 1 in South Miami-Dade County, where many of Miami-Dade County’s early black pioneers are buried.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor, the Chief Financial Officer, the Secretary of State, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, the Chair and members of the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation.
