Commissioner Heyman presented North Miami Beach Police Chief William Berger with the “Key to the City” on behalf of Miami-Dade County, in recognition of his years of fine service within the public safety arena throughout Miami-Dade County and the nation. She noted Chief Berger’s plans to move to Brevard County and serve as Palm Bay’s Chief of Police.
After expressing his sincere appreciation and accepting the Key to the City, North Miami Beach Police Chief William Berger provided a brief overview of the tragic death of Officer Orestes “Oreo” Lorenzo. Officer Lorenzo was killed in the line of duty on July 9, 2004. Officer Lorenzo was elevated to the rank of Police Sergeant posthumously. Chief Berger presented Sergeant Lorenzo’s “Retirement Badge” to Assistant Director Holt (phonetic) and the Miami-Dade County Police Department Honor Guards on behalf of the City of North Miami Beach, in appreciation of their support and assistance.
