TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE U.S. CONGRESS TO PROVIDE FEDERAL HURRICANE RELIEF FUNDS FOR MILITARY INSTALLATIONS IN FLORIDA DAMAGED BY RECENT HURRICANES

BODY
WHEREAS, Florida has been hit with an unprecedented four hurricanes during the 2004 season, Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne; and
WHEREAS, dozens of lives were lost and tens of thousands of homes and businesses were damaged by these four hurricanes; and
WHEREAS, the hurricanes also extensively damaged a number of military bases located in Florida; and
WHEREAS, military bases have a significant positive impact on Florida’s economy, with a statewide economic impact of $44 billion that directly or indirectly accounts for 714,500 jobs in Florida; and
WHEREAS, Florida has approximately two dozen military bases that are potentially threatened by the base realignment and closure process over the next year; and
WHEREAS, military bases in Florida damaged by recent hurricanes may be particularly vulnerable to closure; and
WHEREAS, bills are pending in Congress that would provide funds to rebuild Florida military installations that have been damaged by recent hurricanes,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that
Section 1. This Board urges the U.S. Congress to provide federal hurricane relief funds for military installations in Florida damaged by recent hurricanes.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the members of the Florida Congressional Delegation.
Section 3. The Office of Intergovernmental Affairs is directed to include this issue in the County’s 2005 federal legislative package.
