REPORT: Commissioner Sosa expressed her pleasure in sponsoring the foregoing resolution and provided a brief overview of its purpose to memorialize the late, Mr. Cesar Calas' career and good works. She thanked Mr. Victor Pujol of the Florida Engineering Society, for requesting the designation of the Cesar A. Calas, P.E. Memorial Highway. She noted she would request that the language in the title of this resolution be amended to change the word “Jr.” to “P.E.” Commissioner Sosa expressed her gratitude to her colleagues for co-sponsoring this resolution with her. She recognized Ms. Ester Calas, a County employee, expressed her condolences. Ms. Ester Calas expressed her appreciation to the Commission for the designation and kind words spoken. Commissioner Sorenson asked that all Commissioners be added as co-sponsors, as requested. There being no further discussion, the Board voted to adopt the foregoing resolution as amended to change the name designation from “Cesar A. Calas, Jr.” to Cesar A. Calas, P.E.”

TITLE
RESOLUTION JOINING THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO CODESIGNATE SW 8TH STREET FROM SW 57TH AVENUE TO SW 62ND AVENUE AS CESAR A. CALÁS, P.E. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY

BODY
WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating SW 8th Street from SW 57th Avenue to SW 62nd Avenue as Cesar A. Calás, P.E. Memorial Highway; and
WHEREAS, Cesar A. Calás, P.E. was born in Habana, Cuba on July 18, 1949 and at the age of 13 he settled in Miami with his family; and
WHEREAS, Cesar A. Calás, P.E. graduated with a Civil Engineering Degree from the University of Miami in 1979 and subsequently obtained a General Engineering Contractor's License from Miami-Dade County in 1981; and
WHEREAS, Cesar A. Calás, P.E. served as a Professional Engineer for the Miami-Dade County Public Works Department and later embarked in a successful private Consulting Engineering practice; and
WHEREAS, during his 29 year career Cesar A. Calás, P.E. established a reputation for professionalism, tenacity, and quality was recognized throughout this community; for those who associated with him, he was cherished as a friend who was loyal and unconditional when asked for assistance or advice; and
WHEREAS, Cesar A. Calás, P.E., as representative for the City of Miami's Community Redevelopment Agency, expedited the Margaret Pace Park Project. Without Cesar's relentless dedication to this project, the redevelopment of what is now recognized as a model city park may never have happened; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 6 and this portion of roadway was symbolically chosen since Cesar's efforts and uncompromising assistance to the City of West Miami merit this special recognition; and
WHEREAS, Cesar A. Calás, P.E. suddenly passed away on January 7, 2003 and is survived by his wife Esther, two daughters, Desiree and Vanessa, and grandchild Mathew; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Cesar A. Calás, P.E. with this codesignation,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. The Board of County Commissioners joins the Florida Legislature on this codesignation.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to send certified copies of this resolution to the members of the Miami-Dade County Delegation of the Florida Legislature.
Section 3. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Authority, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division, Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Police Department, and the Fire Department.
