REPORT: Clerk of Courts Harvey Ruvin provided remarks portraying Mr. Goldstein as a friend and dedicated member of the Planning Advisory Board. He accredited Mr. Goldstein with being a visionary and remarkable contributor to every plan processed in Miami-Dade County for fifteen years. Park and Recreation Department Director Vivian Donnell Rodriguez introduced and welcomed Mrs. Bella Goldstein; Miami Metrozoo Director Eric Stephens; Zoological Society of Florida President Glenn Ekey; former Zoological Society Presidents Ron Esserman and Daniel Licciardi. Commissioner Heyman presented Mrs. Goldstein with a copy of the resolution designating the only tree at Miami Metrozoo’s American Bankers Family Aviary to survive Hurricane Andrew in recognition of the life and service of Mr. Lester Goldstein. She stated that a date would be scheduled for dedication of the tree as a living memorial to Mr. Goldstein and everyone should attend. Commissioner Heyman also noted that the Zoological Society and Miami Metrozoo would create the Lester Goldstein foundation. Mrs. Bella Goldstein appeared before the Board and expressed her sincere appreciation for the memory of her late husband being honored today.

TITLE
RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE ONLY TREE AT METROZOO’S AMERICAN BANKERS FAMILY AVIARY TO SURVIVE HURRICANE ANDREW IN RECOGNITION AND HONOR OF THE LIFE AND SERVICE OF MR. LESTER GOLDSTEIN

BODY
WHEREAS, Mr. Lester Goldstein was loved throughout Miami-Dade County as a community-minded person, who always looked out for those less fortunate than himself; and
WHEREAS, for over twenty years, Mr. Goldstein was a member of the Board of Directors of the Zoological Society of Florida in support of Miami Metrozoo; and
WHEREAS, while Mr. Goldstein was President of the Zoological Society, two major capital development projects were completed to benefit the zoo, the Christopher Weeks Animal Hospital and the Wings of Asia Aviary; and
WHEREAS, there is only one tree that survived Hurricane Andrew and stayed in place throughout the construction of the new aviary; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-1 of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Rule 9.02, this Board has the authority to designate County property; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners in recognition of Mr. Goldstein’s steadfast commitment to Miami Metrozoo wishes to designate the sole tree in the Wings of Asia Aviary in honor of Mr. Goldstein’s life and service to this community; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Goldstein’s efforts undoubtedly benefited Miami Metrozoo, which this Board finds to be in best interest of Miami-Dade County,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board of County Commissioners hereby designates the one remaining Silk Floss Tree in Metrozoo’s American Bankers Family Aviary in recognition and honor of the life and service of Mr. Lester Goldstein, a true pillar of the community.
