TITLE
RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE COUNTY MANAGER TO EXPLORE SOLUTIONS TO PROVIDE TEMPORARY SUPPORTIVE HOUSING TO YOUNG PEOPLE TRANSITIONING OUT OF FOSTER CARE

BODY
WHEREAS, there is an immediate and critical need for housing for youth transitioning out of foster care; and
WHEREAS, many of these young people experience temporary homelessness during their first year out of foster care, and often they cannot complete their education because of the major disruption of their lives and their complete lack of resources after they are released into the world after foster care; and
WHEREAS, this population ordinarily does not have the money to pay the first and last month deposit and security necessary to rent an apartment, and do not have the established credit needed to sign most leases; and
WHEREAS, these children need a variety of services to help them transition out of foster care successfully, and the failure to take action at this stage in their lives often sets the stage for a downward spiral into crime, prostitution, or mental depression, resulting in a prolonged drain on this county's public funding; and
WHEREAS, there is a need to create temporary supportive housing to prevent homelessness for this population,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board directs the County Manager to examine possible locations, strategies, and funding sources to provide supportive housing for children transitioning out of foster care.
