TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE OF FLORIDA AND THE U.S. CONGRESS NOT TO REDUCE FUNDING FOR SAFE AND DRUG FREE SCHOOLS

BODY
WHEREAS, this Board recognizes the importance of reducing substance abuse among our youth; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County presently funds programs to prevent, treat and reduce substance abuse; and
WHEREAS, this Board supports the Addiction Services Board (ASB) in its efforts to advocate for continued funding for Safe and Drug Free Schools; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County Public Schools receives State and Federal Funds for its Safe and Drug Free Schools program; and
WHEREAS, every middle and senior high school in Miami-Dade County Public Schools has a TRUST ("To Reach Ultimate Success Together") Specialist paid for through Safe and Drug Free Schools funds; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners recognizes that through Safe and Drug Free Schools, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has established critically needed programs to deal with mental health issues, chemical dependency, self-destructive behaviors, violence prevention and issues related to improving family relationships; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners understands that State and Federal funds for Safe and Drug Free Schools may face elimination,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board urges the U.S. Congress not to reduce funding for the Safe and Drug Free Schools program.
Section 2. This Board urges the State Legislature not to reduce funding for the Safe and Drug Free Schools program.
Section 3. The Clerk of the Board is directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Chair and members of the Miami-Dade County Congressional and State Legislative Delegations.
Section 4. The Office of Intergovernmental Affairs is directed to include this issue in the County's 2006 state and federal legislative packages.
