TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE PRESIDENT, THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT ("HUD") TO ALLOCATE SECTION 8 HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHERS TO DISPLACED PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS LIVING IN THE GULF COAST STATES IMPACTED BY HURRICANE KATRINA

BODY
WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall as a Category 4 storm with winds of 145 mph devastating the states of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama; and
WHEREAS, these areas have been declared a federal disaster area by the President of the United States; and
WHEREAS, in its aftermath it is estimated that more than one million people are currently homeless as a direct result of Hurricane Katrina and living in shelters in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and other states; and
WHEREAS, many of these displaced persons are low income families who resided in public housing; and
WHEREAS, many of these displaced public housing residents will be housed in other public housing units throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, additional housing assistance will be required to house those public housing residents who cannot be absorbed by other public housing authorities due to lack of vacancies,
WHEREAS, Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers should be utilized by the HUD as an alternative means to house these displaced public housing residents,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. The President, the United States Congress and the HUD are urged to allocate sufficient Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers to assist in the housing of displaced public housing residents living in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the President, the Speaker of the House, the President of the Senate, the Secretary of HUD, and the Chair of the Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation.
