TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY TO PRESERVE TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE STATUS FOR ILLEGAL MIGRANTS FROM EL SALVADOR, HONDURAS AND NICARAGUA

BODY
WHEREAS, Temporary Protective Status is a special immigration status that prohibits the deportation of illegal immigrants if wars or natural disasters make it difficult for them to return home; and
WHEREAS, Temporary Protective Status was approved in 1998 for Hondurans and Nicaraguans after their countries were struck by Hurricane Mitch, and for Salvadorans in 2001 after earthquakes killed more than 1,000 people and destroyed more than 200,000 homes in El Salvador; and
WHEREAS, renewals of Temporary Protective Status have been routinely granted in recent years to Hondurans, Nicaraguans and Salvadorans; and
WHEREAS, an estimated 300,000 Honduran, Nicaraguan and Salvadoran migrants are currently in the U.S. under Temporary Protective Status, many in South Florida; and
WHEREAS, these three poor countries rely heavily on support sent back from migrants working in the U.S. to their native countries; and
WHEREAS, the Bush Administration has recently signaled that it may soon end Temporary Protective Status for Honduran, Nicaraguan and Salvadoran migrants,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to preserve Temporary Protective Status for illegal migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of Homeland Security and the members of the Miami-Dade County Congressional Delegation.
