Intergov., Recreation & Cultural Affairs Cmte. 5/17/2006 1E3 Report Received
REPORT: Assistant County Attorney Monica Maldonado read the foregoing discussion item into the record. Ms. Shelly Spivak (phonetic), Chairwoman of the Board, Coconut Grove Playhouse, expressed appreciation to Miami-Dade County for supporting the Coconut Grove Playhouse. She noted there was a vision for the Playhouse to proceed, however there was an approximately $4 million dollar deficit. Ms. Spivak stated in an effort to address the financial problems, a law firm had been engaged to assist with an out of court settlement and to work with the creditors, and a forensic auditor had also been engaged to review the records. She noted the auditor would provide a preliminary report regarding the financial status of the Playhouse. Ms. Spivak said the Board was seeking to bring aboard a company which specializes in arts organizations to assist in totally reorganizing the Playhouse and an interim director to work with the Playhouse to create new by-laws and restructure the organization of the Playhouse. In an effort to raise funds, Ms. Spivak stated she met with the Dade Community Foundation to establish a fund to save the Playhouse. Ms. Spivak apprised the committee that there was no staff at the Playhouse because there were no funds to compensate them, however, she anticipated a mini-season in January if all went well. Chairwoman Heyman asked that Assistant County Manager Alex Munoz ensure that the County Administration received a copy of the audit report which would be prepared by the forensic auditor engaged by the Coconut Grove Playhouse. She also asked that staff determine whether some of the funds identified for maintaining the building could be redirected towards hiring maintenance staff for the Playhouse.
