TITLE
RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING THE ENTRANCE ROAD TO METRO DADE POLICE HEADQUARTERS FROM NW 25 STREET AS MAJOR FERNANDO ''FREDDY'' MENDEZ WAY

BODY
WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating the entrance road to Metro Dade Police Headquarters from NW 25th Street as Major Fernando ''Freddy'' Mendez Way; and
WHEREAS, Major Fernando Mendez was born in Cuba in 1946 and at the age of 12, he came to the United States during the freedom flights known as ''Operation Pedro Pan''; and
WHEREAS, Major Fernando Mendez joined the United States Army and served our country honorably in the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, Major Fernando Mendez was hired in 1975 by the Miami-Dade Police Department and started his tour of duty in what was called ''West District''. Affectionately knows as ''Freddy'' by his many friends, he worked as a robbery detective for several years and in the early 1980s became a sergeant in the Organized Crime Unit, which later became the Criminal Intelligence Bureau (CIB); and
WHEREAS, during his tenure at CIB, Major Mendezís efforts and leadership led to the creation of the Federal Bureau of Investigationís Joint Terrorism Task Force, a multi-agency entity that served to thwart domestic and international acts of terrorism; and

WHEREAS, Major Fernando Mendezís keen tact in the art of intelligence gathering proved to be essential during crucial periods such as the Mariel boatlift, the Iraqi War, the 1994 Summit of the Americas, the Elian Gonzalez crisis and numerous other special events; and
WHEREAS, Major Fernando Mendez was known for his charisma and his firm view of right from wrong. Throughout the extent of his illustrious career, his vision served the citizens of Miami-Dade County in a fine and honorable manner; and
WHEREAS, Major Fernando Mendez passed away on March 30, 2006, and is survived by his wife, Mercy Mendez, son, Miami-Dade Police Officer Michael Mendez of the Hammocks District and daughter Mercy Mendez; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Major Fernandez Mendez with this codesignation; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 12,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board approves the codesignation to the entrance road to Metro Dade Police Headquarters from NW 25th Street as Major Fernando ''Freddy'' Mendez Way.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
