TITLE
RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING AND URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO CO-DESIGNATE NW 12TH STREET FROM NW 12TH AVENUE TO NW 14TH AVENUE AS JUDGE MANNY CRESPO STREET

BODY
WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating NW 12th Street from NW 12th Avenue to NW 14th Avenue as Judge Manny Crespo Street; and
WHEREAS, Judge Manny Crespo was born on October 2, 1945 in Havana, Cuba, and at the age of five his parents moved the family to Miami to what is now Little Havana; and
WHEREAS, Judge Manny Crespo graduated from Archbishop Curley Senior High School, went to Miami Dade College, and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Florida Atlantic University. He attended Memphis State University from 1972 to 1975 where he graduated with a Juris Doctor degree; and
WHEREAS, Judge Manny Crespo passed the Florida Bar exam in October, 1976 and joined the one-man law firm of Carlos Lidsky where he worked for four years. Lidsky’s office was a great training ground where he did criminal defense, personal injury, divorces and bankruptcy. After those four years Lidsky told him, “You’ve learned everything I can teach you. It’s time to fly on your own;” and
WHEREAS, Judge Manny Crespo was first elected as a circuit court judge in 1996; and
WHEREAS, among the notorious defendants who appeared in front of Judge Crespo were alleged Shenandoah rapist and prison escapee Reynaldo E. Rapalo, Mykhaylo Kofel a young monk accused in 2001 in the West Kendall murder of a nun, and Labrant Dennis who was convicted in the 1999 double slaying at a University of Miami on-campus apartment; and
WHEREAS, Judge Manny Crespo passed away January 8, 2006 and is survived by his son, Manny Crespo, his wife Susi, his daughter Elizabeth, his two grandchildren and his sisters Maggie Soto and Josefina Cox; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor Judge Manny Crespo with this codesignation for being a true champion of justice and a public servant at heart; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 3,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. The Board approves the codesignation and urges the City of Miami to approve this codesignation.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to send certified copies of this resolution to the City of Miami Manager, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
