TITLE
RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MANAGER TO PREPARE A REPORT CONCERNING THE EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING OF SPECIALIZED POLICE UNITS WITH HIGH POWER WEAPONS TO COMBAT CRIME

BODY
WHEREAS, two police officers were ambushed in Opa-locka on October 14, 2006 by a suspect with a high-powered rifle; and
WHEREAS, the police at times do not have the same firepower as criminals which places the sworn officers lives at peril; and
WHEREAS, police officers put their lives on the line each and every day; and
WHEREAS, it is in the interests of police officer safety that its officers have the ability to effectively defend themselves when under attack by criminals,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the County Manager is directed to prepare, in consultation with the Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, a report within thirty days assessing the need for increased firepower for specialized units within the police department. Such report shall include the cost, training and certification requirements to implement an increase in firepower for these specialized units.
