REPORT: | In response to Commissioner Sorenson’s inquiry why the foregoing proposed resolution was on today’s agenda when this issue was addressed by the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Commissioner Heyman stated this item differed in that it provided for an express water transit service from two sites—one south and one north. Commissioner Moss spoke in support, however, he noted it was a take off from the MPO study that was done. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MANAGER TO EXAMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING AN EXPRESS WATER TRANSIT SERVICE FROM MATHESON HAMMOCK TO DOWNTOWN MIAMI AND FROM HAULOVER PARK TO DOWNTOWN MIAMI BODY WHEREAS, traffic congestion continues to be one of the most severe problems in Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, water transit services is an alternative transportation mode that could be available for daily commuters and visitors to alleviate traffic congestion; and WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has conducted two studies regarding the feasibility of implementing water transit services in Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, the implementation of this project requires close coordination with other entities regarding environmental and permitting approvals, funding, and potential construction of docking facilities, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board hereby directs the County Manager to prepare a report to determine the feasibility of implementing an express water transit service from Matheson Hammock to downtown Miami and from Haulover Park to downtown Miami. This report will include: total estimated cost, a time schedule for implementation and estimated travel times considering all environmental restrictions, among others. The report will be presented within 60 days of the approval of this resolution. |
