TITLE
RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING AND URGING THE CITY OF DORAL TO CODESIGNATE NW 107TH AVENUE FROM NW 74TH STREET TO NW 90TH STREET AS ''RONALD REAGAN AVENUE''

BODY
WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating and urging the City of Doral to codesignate NW 107th Avenue from NW 74th Street to NW 90th Street as “Ronald Reagan Avenue;” and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan was born February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the United States on January 20, 1981 to January 10, 1989; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan promoted legislation stimulating economic growth, curbing inflation, increasing employment, strengthening national defense, and obtaining an overhaul of the income tax code, ultimately eliminating many deductions and exempting millions of low income Americans; and
WHEREAS, in terms of foreign policy, Ronald Reagan sought to achieve “peace through strength”, increasing defense spending 35 percent, but improving relations with the Soviet Union by negotiating a treaty that eliminated intermediate-range nuclear missiles; and
WHEREAS, the Reagan Doctrine became the centerpiece of American foreign policy from the mid-1980s until the end of the Cold War in 1991, giving support to anti-communist insurgencies in central America, Asia, and Africa, and opening the door for democracy in nations that were largely being governed by soviet-supported dictators; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan brought national attention to Miami-Dade County when he visited on the 81st anniversary of Cuba’s independence from Spain as well as when he and Pope John Paul II addressed the international press from Vizcaya Museum and Gardens during the Pontiff’s first visit to America; and
WHEREAS, at the end of his administration, the nation was enjoying its longest recorded period of peacetime prosperity without recession or depression; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan lost his battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on June 5, 2004 at the age of 93; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Ronald Wilson Reagan with this codesignation; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 12,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board approves the codesignation and urges the City of Doral to approve the codesignation of NW 107th Avenue from NW 74th Street to NW 90th Street “Ronald Reagan Avenue”.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the City Commission of Doral, United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
