TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO PASS LEGISLATION PROVIDING SPECIAL RISK RETIREMENT BENEFITS TO PUBLIC EMPLOYEES IN THE FLORIDA RETIREMENT SYSTEM WORKING AS OCEAN LIFEGUARDS

BODY
WHEREAS, public employees working as ocean lifeguards are employed in an inherently dangerous profession; and
WHEREAS, ocean lifeguards are regularly called upon to risk their own lives to save the lives of this State's residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, this Board believes ocean lifeguards deserve to be fairly compensated for the duties they perform and the risks they take; and
WHEREAS, bills were filed in both the House and Senate during the 2006 state legislative session that would have provided ocean lifeguards with special risk retirement benefits who are public employees in the Florida Retirement System, but these bills did not pass,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the Florida Legislature to pass legislation providing special risk retirement benefits to public employees in the Florida Retirement System working as ocean lifeguards.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor, Senate President, House Speaker, and the Chair and members of the Miami- Dade County State Legislative Delegation.
Section 3. Directs the County's state lobbyists to advocate for the passage of the legislation set forth in Section 1 above, and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to include this item in the 2007 State Legislative Package.
