TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO FUND LAND ACQUISITION FOR COASTAL AND REMNANT EVERGLADES WETLANDS IN SOUTH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY THAT CONNECT EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK AND BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK

BODY
WHEREAS, there are more than 70,000 acres of coastal and remnant Everglades wetlands in south Miami-Dade County, south of the Cities of Florida City and Homestead; and
WHEREAS, these wetlands are important as a statewide resource, because they provide a natural connectivity between Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park, which host more than 1.7million visitors a year, and are the gateway to the Florida Keys; and
WHEREAS, these wetlands are the last remaining original coastal Everglades that remain without a comprehensive long-term protection plan; and
WHEREAS, they have been identified by Miami-Dade County, the South Florida Water Management District, the National Parks Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service as ecologically sensitive and important for protection; and
WHEREAS, these wetlands provide a natural barrier against hurricane damage and flooding to Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, unprecedented rises in property values could impair the ability to acquire remaining needed lands if the land is not purchased in the near term,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the Florida Legislature to fund land acquisition for coastal and remnant Everglades wetlands in south Miami-Dade County that connect Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park.
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the Governor, Senate President, House Speaker, and Chair and members of the Miami-Dade State Legislative Delegation.
Section 3. Directs the County's state lobbyists to advocate for the funding identified in section 1 above, and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to include this item in the 2007 state legislative package.
