It was moved by Commissioner Sorenson that this proposed resolution be forwarded with a favorable recommendation. This motion was seconded by Commissioner Diaz. Commissioners Diaz, Souto, and Gimenez asked that they be listed as co-sponsors. Hearing no other questions or comments, the Committee proceeded to vote.

TITLE
RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO DESIGNATE PART OF THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE HOMESTEAD EXTENSION IN SOUTH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY THE ''JOHN F. COSGROVE HIGHWAY''

BODY
WHEREAS, John F. Cosgrove served two decades as a State Representative from South Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, following Hurricane Andrew, Cosgrove was instrumental in getting legislation passed in 1993 to keep private insurance companies from leaving South Florida; and
WHEREAS, in 2004, Cosgrove was named chairman of the Citizens Independent Transportation Trust; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, Cosgrove was elected the Town of Cutler Bay's first mayor; and
WHEREAS, on April 19, 2006, Cosgrove died suddenly after becoming ill and undergoing an emergency appendectomy while on a vacation trip to Zimbabwe; and
WHEREAS, Senator Larcenia Bullard has filed a bill for the upcoming 2007 State Legislative Session, SB 138, that would designate as the "John F. Cosgrove Highway" part of the Florida Turnpike Homestead Extension, between Exit 16 at S.W. 152nd Street and Exit 11 at S.W. 216th Street in Miami-Dade County,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Urges the Florida Legislature to designate part of the Florida Turnpike Homestead Extension in South Miami-Dade County the "John F. Cosgrove Highway."
Section 2. Expresses its support for SB 138, filed by Senator Larcenia Bullard, or similar legislation.
Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor, Senate President, House Speaker, and the Chair and members of the Miami-Dade County State Legislative Delegation.
Section 4. Directs the County's state lobbyists to advocate for the passage of the legislation set forth in Sections 1 and 2 above, and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to include this issue in the 2007 state legislative package.
