REPORT: | Commissioner Seijas commended the late Mr. Robert A. Cuevas and his efforts to improve water availability in the County. She presented Mrs. Robert A. Cuevas with a flower vase with the County seal to honor her husband. She noted that the “Water for the People” Fund would be named in honor of Mr. Cuevas. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION DEDICATING WATER FOR PEOPLE WEEK 2007 TO THE MEMORY OF ROBERT A. CUEVAS AND FURTHER DIRECTING THAT ALL MIAMI-DADE COUNTY CONTRIBUTIONS AND SUPPORT IN CONNECTION THEREWITH BE MADE IN THE NAME AND MEMORY OF ROBERT A. CUEVAS BODY WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution R-67-07, this Board declared the first week of April of each year to be �Water for People Week,� and authorized County staff to coordinate with the American Water Works Association to support outreach, education and fundraising to improve the quality and sustainable supply of clean water, both locally and worldwide; and WHEREAS, Robert A. Cuevas served from 1985 to 1995 as Chief Engineer of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department, and in that capacity completed a life-long career devoted to the delivery of safe drinking water for people; and WHEREAS, Robert A. Cuevas was an accomplished civil engineer who made concrete and significant contributions to innovative water delivery programs, including the design and installation of the first water treatment and distribution system in Paraguay, in the capital city of Asunci�n; participation in the early studies of the U.S. Public Health Service on the effects of nuclear radiation on water and sewer systems, at the Atomic Test Center in Yucca Flats, Arizona; the design and installation of the current pipeline under the Overseas Highway supplying water to the Florida Keys; and the final design of the Miami-Dade County Trans-Bay pipeline from the mainland to Virginia Key; and WHEREAS, throughout his career Robert A. Cuevas received many professional honors in his chosen field, among them designation as a Senior Diplomate in the American Water Works Association, and selection to participate in the People to People Program between the United States and China, which provided for the exchange of engineering information between the two countries; and WHEREAS, Robert A. Cuevas, a 43-year resident of Key Biscayne, was married for 63 years to Elba Dayton Cuevas, was the father of First Assistant County Attorney Robert A. Cuevas, Jr., Josephine Cuevas-McNamara and Susan Marino, and had five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and WHEREAS, Robert A. Cuevas passed away on February 2, 2007, and this Board wishes to honor his memory and his extraordinary contributions to public service, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board hereby dedicates Water for People Week 2007 to the memory of Robert A. Cuevas, and further directs that all contributions and support from the efforts of Miami-Dade County and its officials and employees in connection therewith be made in the name and memory of Robert A. Cuevas. |
