REPORT: | Assistant County Attorney Benitez read the foregoing resolution into the record. It was moved by Commissioner Martinez that this proposed resolution be forwarded with a favorable recommendation. This motion was seconded by Commissioner Souto. Commissioner Souto asked that he be listed as a co-sponsor. Hearing no other questions or comments, the Committee proceeded to vote. It was moved by Commissioner Gimenez that the Committee reconsider this proposed resolution. This motion was seconded by Commissioner Sosa, and upon being put to a vote, passed 5-0 (Commissioner Sorenson was absent). Commissioner Diaz asked that he be listed as a co-sponsor. TITLE RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER AS NICARAGUAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH BODY WHEREAS, Nicaraguan-Americans constitute one of the largest Hispanic communities in Miami-Dade County, thereby contributing to the cultural diversity and richness of the County; and WHEREAS, the month of September is of particular historical relevance to the Nicaraguan-Americans in Miami-Dade County because Miami-Dade County�s immigrant population from Nicaragua began its rapid growth in September of 1972, following an earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, the Board desires to declare the month of September as Nicaraguan-American Heritage Month and to encourage observance of the month with appropriate exhibitions, ceremonies, celebrations, and activities, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board declares the month of September as Nicaraguan-American Heritage Month in order to encourage observance of the month with appropriate exhibitions, ceremonies, celebrations, and activities to recognize and honor the heritage, accomplishments, and contributions of Nicaraguan-Americans to our community. |
