TITLE
RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF MAY AS OLDER AMERICANS’ MONTH

BODY
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County is home to more than 314,000 citizens 65 years of age or older; and
WHEREAS, the older citizens of Miami-Dade County represent a dramatic trend in our nation’s demographic make up; and
WHEREAS, older Americans make significant contributions to our community, through civic leadership and mentoring, and in our homes, by giving of themselves freely and by sharing their wisdom and experience; and
WHEREAS, older Americans provide us with invaluable links to the past, and can offer wise counsel for the future; and
WHEREAS, in 1963, President John F. Kennedy established the month of May as “Senior Citizens’ Month” and every President since has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities; and
WHEREAS, in 1980 President Jimmy Carter modified the designation and changed the name to “Older Americans’ Month”; and
WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County desires to take part in this recognition of the important contributions of older Americans and desires to build a multi-generational perspective, where there are young people working as volunteers to assist our elders, and at the same time, there are older adults working with youth; and
WHEREAS, the Board desires to declare the month of May as Older Americans’ Month and to encourage observance of the month with the appropriate exhibitions, ceremonies, celebrations, and activities,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board declares the month of May as Older Americans’ Month and urges all citizens to honor older adults, and those who care for them, during May and throughout the year. This Board urges all to encourage the observance of the month with appropriate exhibitions, ceremonies, celebrations, and activities to recognize and honor the accomplishments and contributions of the older Americans in our community.
