TITLE
RESOLUTION AMENDING RESOLUTION NO. 213-07, WHICH JOINED THE CITY OF DORAL IN CODESIGNATING NW 107TH AVENUE FROM NW 25TH STREET TO NW 41ST STREET AS PERRY ELLIS WAY, TO CODESIGNATE NW 107TH AVENUE FROM NW 25TH STREET TO NW 41ST STREET AS GEORGE FELDENKREIS WAY

WHEREAS, this Board adopted Resolution No. 213-07 which joined the City of Doral in codesignating NW 107th Avenue from NW 25th Street to NW 41st Street as Perry Ellis Way; and
WHEREAS, this Board desires to amend Resolution No. 213-07 by codesignating NW 107th Avenue from NW 25th Street to NW 41st Street as George Feldenkreis Way; and
WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating NW 107th Avenue from NW 25th Street to NW 41st Street as George Feldenkreis Way; and
WHEREAS, George Feldenkreis, a Cuban lawyer of Ukrainian descent, came to the United States in 1961 and started a small apparel wholesale company called Supreme International in 1967 as an importer of guayabera shirts; and
WHEREAS, Supreme�s rapid expansion led to the acquisition of Perry Ellis International in April 1999; and
WHEREAS, for his entrepreneurial savvy and business successes, Mr. Feldenkreis was awarded Business Man of the Year in 1998 by Ernst & Young. According to Forbes magazine, Perry Ellis International ranks among the 200 best small companies in America; and
WHEREAS, while it is his accomplishments as a businessman that have brought him public recognition, his biggest achievement has been as a dedicated community leader. He supports numerous organizations, including the Jewish Federation; he received the Lincoln-Marti award for his role in the Cuban Refugee Program; and he has been honored with the David Ben-Gurion Award, sponsored by the State of Israel and Temple Beth El; and
WHEREAS, a member of the University of Miami�s Board of Trustees since 1997, Mr. Feldenkreis has supported such efforts as Project: New Born, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and scholarships for student-athletes; and
WHEREAS, in 2001, Mr. Feldenkreis established the George Feldenkreis Endowment Fund, which created the George Feldenkreis Distinguished Scholar, a permanent professorship in the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies; and
WHEREAS, established in 1998, the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies is the only university-located academic and research center in the United States to focus primarily on twentieth and twenty-first century Jewish studies as well as trends affecting the future of the Jewish people; and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 12,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. This Board finds that George Feldenkreis has made a direct, significant lifetime contribution to this community.
Section 2. By three-fifths of the Board Members present, this Board approves the codesignation of NW 107th Avenue from NW 25th Street to NW 41st Street as George Feldenkreis Way.
Section 3. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Authority, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Police Department, and the Fire Department.
