REPORT: | Assistant County Attorney Cynthia Johnson-Stacks read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. Commissioner Jordan offered an amendment to the foregoing proposed resolution to include focusing on crime prevention. Following Vice Chairwoman Sorenson’s request regarding the proposed amendment and the absence of the sponsor, Commissioner Jordan stated she would present the amendment when the proposed resolution was considered by the County Commission. Hearing no further questions or comments, the Committee proceeded to vote on the foregoing proposed resolution as presented. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE COUNTY MANAGER TO PREPARE A PLAN FOR THE ENFORCEMENT OF CRIMINAL LAWS IN AND AROUND PUBLIC HOUSING PROPERTIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS AND THE PUBLIC BODY WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County operates many Public Housing properties for the benefit of all residents of Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, on occasion, residents of Public Housing, have been the victims of crimes in a greater number than many non residents; and WHEREAS, the safety of Public Housing residents, employees and visitors to Public Housing is of utmost importance to this County; and WHEREAS, the safety of citizens near and surrounding Public Housing is also of utmost importance to this County; and WHEREAS, the strong enforcement of criminal laws in and around Public Housing is in the best interest of all residents of Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, deterring crime in and around Public Housing is in the public interest and improves the quality of life for all residents of Miami-Dade County, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board of County Commissioners directs the County Manager to prepare a plan for the strong and consistent enforcement of criminal laws in and around the various Public Housing properties owned by Miami-Dade County for the protection of all citizens. The plan should include the feasibility and cost of implementing a Public Housing Police Unit, as has been done in the past. The plan shall be returned to this Board of County Commissioners within 45 days of this date. |
