REPORT: Every commissioner, except the sponsor Commissioner Moss, asked that they be listed as co-sponsors. Commissioner Moss noted that nine (9) firefighters in Charleston, South Carolina, gave their lives on June 18, 2007, which started this proposed resolution. He said this proposal would be sent to all municipalities and fire departments, accompanied by a proclamation signed by each commissioner. Following comments by Mr. Herminio Lorenzo, Fire Chief, Fire Rescue, regarding the firefighters who died while attempting to save two people trapped in a burning furniture store, the Commission proceeded to vote.

TITLE
RESOLUTION HONORING THE MEMORY OF NINE SOUTH CAROLINA FIREFIGHTERS WHO PERISHED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

BODY
WHEREAS, the firefighting profession is one requiring great dedication and commitment in protecting life and property; and
WHEREAS, nine veteran Firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty battling a furniture warehouse blaze in Charleston, South Carolina on June 18, 2007; and
WHEREAS, representatives of the Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue Department attended the public memorial service in Charleston on June 22, 2007; and
WHEREAS, all citizens of Miami-Dade County and around the nation mourn the passing of these public servants as a result of this tragedy; and
WHEREAS, the men and women in the fire service encounter hazards on a daily basis in
a dangerous profession; and
WHEREAS, these firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting their community; and
WHEREAS, the fire service has experienced a great loss, and the unwavering courage of those who perished will be remembered; and
WHEREAS, our hearts and prayers go out to the families, friends and colleagues of those Firefighters,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA that Miami-Dade County recognizes the value of the men and women serving their community in the fire service and hereby remembers their courageous dedication to public service and express their heartfelt condolences.
