TITLE
RESOLUTION RENAMING THE OVERTOWN/ARENA METRORAIL STATION AT 100 NW 6th STREET AS THE HISTORIC OVERTOWN/LYRIC THEATRE METRORAIL STATION

BODY
WHEREAS, Overtown is one of the oldest and most historic neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the Lyric Theatre, soon after its opening in 1913, became a major entertainment center; and
WHEREAS, the Lyric Theatre has served as a symbol of African-American economic vitality, as well as a social setting free of discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the Lyric Theatre anchored the district within Overtown which due to its thriving hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs became known as �Little Broadway�; and
WHEREAS, historic Overtown throughout the era of legalized segregation housed African-American artists who could perform in the clubs on Miami Beach but not stay in the hotels; and
WHEREAS, the Lyric Theatre has hosted such legendary performers as Count Basie, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and B.B. King,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board approves the renaming of the Overtown/Arena Metrorail Station at 100 NW 6th Street as the Historic Overtown/Lyric Theatre Metrorail Station.
