REPORT: | Assistant County Attorney Christian read into the record the foregoing proposed resolution. Commissioner Sosa asked staff to prepare the appropriate memorandum requesting that the Chairman Moss waive the Committee's rules and allow the foregoing proposed resolution to be heard at the October 16, 2007 County Commission meeting. Commissioner Diaz requested to be listed as a co-sponsor for the foregoing proposed resolution as well as Agenda Item 2B and 2C. Hearing no further questions or comments the Committee proceeded to vote. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER BEGINNING IN OCTOBER 2007 AND EACH YEAR THEREAFTER AS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH BODY WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women behind lung cancer; and WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that about 178,480 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2007, and 40,460 women will die from the disease this year; and WHEREAS, currently there are over 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer; and WHEREAS, the Board of Sponsors of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages all women to recognize the importance of early detection; and WHEREAS, through medical research, progress is being made toward a future when no one will have to face breast cancer; and WHEREAS, progress is also being made on early detection of breast cancer as mammography rates have more than doubled in women over 50 and breast cancer deaths have declined over the last two decades; and WHEREAS, this Board desires to declare the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to encourage observance of the month with appropriate educational campaigns, events and activities, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Declares the month of October beginning in October, 2007 and each year thereafter as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Section 2. Encourages Miami-Dade County residents to learn more about breast cancer, the importance of early detection, and effective treatments. Section 3. Further encourages Miami-Dade County residents to participate in events that increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for breast cancer medical research, such as the Making Strides for Breast Cancer annual walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Section 4. Encourages the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with appropriate educational campaigns, events and activities. |
