REPORT: | Notwithstanding this proposed resolution being adopted with the motion to set the Agenda in Agenda Item 1F, Commissioner Rolle noted members of the Peaceful Zion Church were present, and he presented Reverend C.P. Preston, Jr. to the County Commission. Ms. Betty Dudley introduced Dr. C.P. Preston Jr., Pastor, Peaceful Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She noted he worked to promote harmony and quality of life for County citizens, as well as ecclesiastically for many churches and in community outreach. Dr. Preston expressed appreciation to the County Commission for honoring him. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO DESIGNATE THAT PORTION OF STATE ROAD 934 ON N.W. 79th STREET BETWEEN N.W. 7th AVENUE AND N.W. 37th AVENUE AS �REV. DR. C.P. PRESTON, JR. STREET�; AND APPROVING SUCH DESIGNATION BODY WHEREAS, Preston serves as a moderator for the East Coast Missionary Baptist Association, which is the second largest such association in the U.S.; and WHEREAS, Preston is a board member for the Florida Consortium of Black Faith-Based Organizations, Inc.; and WHEREAS, Preston is a graduate of Miami Carol City Senior High School, Florida Memorial University, Nova Southeastern University, and North Florida Baptist Theological Seminary; and WHEREAS, Preston has been conferred honorary degrees by Smith Chapel Bible College and Trinity Theological Seminary of South Florida; and WHEREAS, Preston served as a classroom teacher for 11 years in the Miami-Dade Public Schools; and WHEREAS, Preston served a 1st Vice-President of the Florida General Baptist Convention, Inc.; and WHEREAS, before the Florida Department of Transportation will install signs reflecting the �Rev. Dr. C.P. Preston, Jr. Street� road designation, Miami-Dade County is required to pass a resolution in support of this road designation; and WHEREAS, this state road designation would be located in District 2 if approved by the Legislature, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Urges the Florida Legislature to designate that portion of State Road 934 on N.W. 79th Street between N.W. 7th Avenue and N.W. 37th Avenue as �Rev. Dr. C.P. Preston, Jr. Street.� Section 2. Approves the designation of that portion of State Road 934 on N.W. 79th Street between N.W. 7th Avenue and N.W. 37th Avenue as �Rev. Dr. C.P. Preston, Jr. Street�. Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the Governor; the Senate President; the House Speaker; the Chair and Members of the MiamiDade State Legislative Delegation, and the Secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation. Section 4. Directs the County's state lobbyists to advocate for the issues identified in Section 1 above, and directs the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs to include this item in the 2008 state legislative package. |
