TITLE RESOLUTION DIRECTING THE MAYOR OR HIS DESIGNEE TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF REINSTATING THE ORANGE BLOSSOM CLASSIC FOOTBALL GAME IN MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AND TO REPORT BACK TO THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WITHIN 60 DAYS BODY WHEREAS, the Orange Blossom Classic Football Game and Festivities is a special event, not just a football game started by Florida A&M University back in 1933; and WHEREAS, the Orange Blossom Classic Football Game is the forerunner of the modern day historically black colleges and university football classics and once was Americas oldest continuing college football classic; and WHEREAS, the Orange Blossom Classic Football Game was the granddaddy of all modern black college football classics and has been held for 67 years over a span of eight decades, in five cities; and WHEREAS, the first Orange Blossom Classic Game was held in 1933 in Jacksonville and the classic moved to Miami in 1947 and became the premier black college football game; and WHEREAS, the Orange Blossom Classic became to black college football what the world famous Rose Bowl is to major school bowl games; and WHEREAS, the Orange Blossom Classic Football games most recent renewal occurred in 2005, with a game between Florida A&M University and Florida International University; and WHEREAS, the economic impact of an Orange Blossom Classic Football Game and weekend can be significant, as are other black college football classic games. As an example: The Florida Classic in Orlando draws over 70,000 fans and has an estimated economic impact of $14 million dollars; the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis has an estimated $17-$20 million dollar impact and the Silver Dollar Classic held in Las Vegas generated an estimated $25 million in revenue for the city of Las Vegas, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board directs the Mayor or his designee to study the feasibility of reinstating the Orange Blossom Football Classic and to report back to the Board of County Commissioners within 60 days. |
