REPORT: | First Assistant County Attorney Abigail Price-Williams read the foregoing proposed resolution into the record. The public hearing was opened. It was closed after no one appeared in response to Chairman Barreiro’s call for people wishing to be heard. Chairman Barreiro noted, for the record, he had no relation to Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro. Commissioner Sosa asked that she be listed as a co-sponsor. Hearing no other questions or comments, the Commission proceeded to vote. | ||||||

TITLE RESOLUTION APPROVING THE CODESIGNATION OF S.W. 2ND STREET FROM S.W. 118TH AVENUE TO S.W. 127TH AVENUE AS DR. MANUEL C. BARREIRO STREET BODY WHEREAS, this Board has conducted a public hearing to consider codesignating S.W. 2nd Street from S.W. 118th Avenue to S.W. 127th Avenue as Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro Street; and WHEREAS, Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro's career began in Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 1983 as an ESE teacher at Dunbar Elementary School where he remained until 1989. In 1990, Dr. Barreiro continued his career as a teacher at Jane S. Roberts Elementary School. From 1993 to 1995, Dr. Barreiro served as Assistant Principal at Joe Hall Elementary School. He also had the opportunity to work in the same capacity at Sunset Park Elementary with Dr. Elizabeth Faust, Principal, until 1996; and WHEREAS, in 1996, Dr. Barreiro was appointed Principal at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Elementary School where he remained until his untimely passing on July 28, 2007. During his 11 years as Principal of M.S. Douglas, Dr. Barreiro represented his school with pride and professionalism. He was proud to share the outstanding achievements of his 1,100 students, providing them with a learning environment that fostered academic excellence in two languages, English and Spanish, under the Bilingual School Organization Model. During his tenure at M.S. Douglas, Dr. Barreiro lived his motto, "A Vision of Pride and Excellence," by firmly believing that "things that matter most, must never be at the mercy of things that matter least;" and WHEREAS, Dr. Barreiro enjoyed many years of success as a school principal including four consecutive years of "A" status from the State of Florida, recognizing his school's academic achievement; and WHEREAS, Dr. Barreiro was a visionary leader and a professional educator of the highest caliber with a love of country and family. With a strong commitment to service, he dedicated his professional life to the children and families he served. Dr. Barreiro was selected as the founding principal of the soon to be built Zelda Glazer Middle School; and subsequently, the Miami-Dade Public School Board unanimously approved the naming of Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro Elementary School in West Miami- Dade County; and WHEREAS, Dr. Barreiro is survived by his brother, Dr. Eduardo M. Barreiro, sister-in-law, Marilu Barreiro, and his niece Kristina Barreiro; and WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor the memory of Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro with this codesignation; and WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 12, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that: Section 1. This Board approves the codesignation of S.W. 2nd Street from S.W. 118th Avenue to S.W. 127th Avenue as Dr. Manuel C. Barreiro Street. Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. |
