Sally A. Heyman, Prime Sponsor
Board of County Commissioners
Ms. Wansley Walters, Juvenile Services Department (JSD) Director, noted that in May 2008, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and The U.S. Department of Justice hosted a summit in the County to showcase the County’s juvenile justice model. She also noted that the County Manager would forward to commissioners information from the summit regarding changing business practices in the County. Ms. Walters made a PowerPoint presentation comparing accomplishments of the community to those of the rest of the State and country.
Mr. Harvey Ruvin, Clerk of the Circuit and County Court, noted that he and his staff were pleased to have been involved with the JSD since the JSD began. He added that his office funded some initial positions. Mr. Ruvin commended JSD’s achievements.
Commissioners Sorenson, Diaz, Moss, and Sosa, and Vice Chairwoman Jordan thanked Ms. Walters for her work and commended JSD’s accomplishments.
In response to Commissioner Moss’s inquiry regarding young people receiving civil citations and not following up, Ms. Wansley noted JSD would put the young people through the court and Florida Department of Juvenile Justice systems. She added that efforts were made to keep the youth out of the delinquency system.
Chairman Barreiro noted someone he knew spoke well of JSD’s work.
