TITLE
RESOLUTION JOINING THE CITY OF MIAMI AND APPROVING THE STATE ROAD DESIGNATION OF THAT PORTION OF STATE ROAD 976/S.W. 40TH STREET FROM HIBISCUS STREET TO OHIO STREET AS ��WILL JAMES JOHNSON ROAD��

BODY
WHEREAS, Will James Johnson was born and raised in Coconut Grove, and he graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School in 1971; and
WHEREAS, upon retiring from military service, Johnson returned home to Coconut Grove describing it as his �calling,� according to his wife, Miok; and
WHEREAS, Johnson was a passionate activist for issues in the Village West and Coconut Grove community; and
WHEREAS, Johnson was a past President of the Homeowners and Tenants Association of Village West (HOATA), a former member of the Coconut Grove Village Council representing Village West, and a St. Albans Board Member; and
WHEREAS, Johnson was involved in the Bayshore Drive Beautification project, which was finalized before the Super Bowl hosted by Greater Miami in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Johnson was a major force behind the Grand Avenue Streetscape Beautification Program and the construction and remodeling of Virrick Gym and Park; and
WHEREAS, Johnson served as an aide to former County Commissioner Jimmy Morales; and
WHEREAS, Johnson was an aide to Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez when he passed away on March 2, 2008 at the age of 55; and
WHEREAS, during the 2008 regular session, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 1604, which, among other road designations, designates that portion of State Road 976/S.W. 40th Street from Hibiscus Street to Ohio Street as ��Will James Johnson Road��; and
WHEREAS, section 334.071, Florida Statutes, provides that the installation of road designation signs shall be contingent on the applicable county or city commission passing a resolution in support of the particular honorary road designation; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami approved this road designation by resolution passed June�12, 2008, file number 08-00546,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board:
Section 1. Joins the City of Miami in approving the State Road designation of that portion of State Road 976/S.W. 40th Street from Hibiscus Street to Ohio Street as �Will James Johnson Road.�
Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation.
