TITLE RESOLUTION DESIGNATING AND NAMING THE MARINA AT HAULOVER PARK AS THE BILL BIRD MARINA AT HAULOVER PARK BODY WHEREAS, this Board desires to recognize and acknowledge the distinguished contributions of William �Bill� Bird to Miami-Dade County (the �County�) and to the park and recreation profession; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bird served Metro-Dade County Parks from 1960 to 1966, first as superintendent and later as Assistant Director. WHEREAS, Mr. Bird also served as Director of the Park and Recreation Department (the �Department�) prior to his retirement in 1994; and WHEREAS, prior to becoming a park and recreation professional, Mr. Bird proudly served his country as a U.S. Army Paratrooper; and WHEREAS, in pursuit of his career as a park and recreation professional, he entered and graduated from Texas A & M University with a degree in landscape architecture; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bird was recognized as a champion of park conservation and, in 1965, his efforts were acknowledged with the Bronze Everly Award which was presented to him by Mrs. Lyndon Baines Johnson for his efforts in this area; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bird received many other professional awards during his tenure as Director of the Department, including the distinguished Pugsley Award for outstanding contributions to park and recreation management, which is the highest honor a park and recreation professional can receive; and WHEREAS, under his leadership the Department won the prestigious Gold Medal Award in 1979 and 1987 for outstanding park and recreation management from the National Sports Foundation; and WHEREAS, awards received by the Department during Mr. Bird�s tenure included the National Association of Counties (NaCo) information Officer�s Award of Excellence, National Arts and Humanities Award, American Planning Association Award of Excellence for Park, Recreation, and Open Space Planning, and the U.S. Olympic Committee Commendation for Outstanding Service; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bird oversaw many large-scale developments during his tenure as Director of the Department, including the development of Metrozoo; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bird is loved and respected by the people who worked for him; and WHEREAS, the Department he built personified his mantra of �team, loyalty, integrity, and hard work�; and WHEREAS, this Board wishes to recognize the many accomplishments of a true park and recreation professional who dedicated 40 years to building and managing park and recreation systems. WHEREAS, this proposed naming of the Marina at Haulover Park as the �Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park� is for a County marina located in County Commission District 4, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Finds that Bill Bird has made a direct significant lifetime contribution to this community. Section 2. By three-fifths vote of the Board Members present, this Board approves the naming of the Marina at Haulover Park, located at 10800 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach FL, the �Bill Bird Marina at Haulover Park�. Section 3. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service and the following departments of the County: Fire-Rescue, General Services Administration, Police, and Public Works. |
