TITLE RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING N.W. 77TH AVENUE FROM N.W. 70TH STREET TO N.W. 72ND STREET AS ��PABLO RAUL ALARCON WAY�� BODY WHEREAS, Pablo Raul Alarcon was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba in 1926; and WHEREAS, shortly thereafter, he married Alma Aleman in 1951 and founded his first radio station; and WHEREAS, Pablo Raul Alarcon continued to operate and grow his radio company and by 1960, he owned 14 radio stations; and WHEREAS, in 1960, the communist dictatorship of Fidel Castro confiscated all 14 radio stations that Alarcon owned; and WHEREAS, thereafter, Alarcon moved with his family to New York, and started working as a disc-jockey; and WHEREAS, through the years, Alarcon worked his way into management and into different facets of the media industry; and WHEREAS, in 1983, Alarcon acquired his first radio station in the U.S., establishing the Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS); and WHEREAS, today, SBS is the largest Hispanic-controlled publicly-traded media company in the U.S., operating 21 FM radio stations in six (6) of the largest U.S. Hispanic markets; and WHEREAS, Alarcon served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of SBS until 1999 when he named his son Raul Alarcon, Jr. his successor, becoming Chairman Emeritus of the company until his death early in 2008; and WHEREAS, N.W. 77th Avenue from N.W. 70th Street to N.W. 72nd Street is a county road located in unincorporated Miami-Dade County; and WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in County Commission District 12, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Having considered this matter at a public hearing, codesignates N.W. 77th Avenue from N.W. 70th Street to N.W. 72nd Street as Pablo Raul Alarcon Way. Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. |
