TITLE
RESOLUTION ENDORSING RIVER OF GRASS GREENWAY ALONG THE TAMIAMI TRAIL

BODY
WHEREAS, the Naples Pathways Coalition is proposing the River of Grass Greenway (“ROGG”), which would be a multi-use pathway across the Florida Everglades along the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41); and
WHEREAS, the ROGG will be a hard-surfaced 12-14 foot wide corridor (separated from the highway) suitable for a range of non-motorized recreational activities such as bicycling, walking, bird-watching, photography, fishing, and general enjoyment of the greater Everglades natural area; and
WHEREAS, a steering committee comprised of individuals from greenway advocates, environmental groups, local communities, and government agencies is presently planning the corridor which will extend from Krome Avenue to the outskirts of Naples/Marco Island, with a three mile spur in the middle to Everglades City; and
WHEREAS, the River of Grass Greenway will be designed and built for sustainability, with acute awareness of the potential environmental impact; and
WHEREAS, the Commission believes that the River of Grass Greenway provides opportunities for education, stewardship and preservation of the environmental, historic and cultural assets of this unique area, and is in the best interest of the citizens of Miami-Dade County,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board endorses the River of Grass Greenway so long as the River of Grass Greenway does not prohibit preexisting uses of U.S. 41 and public access to public lands adjacent to U.S. 41. Further, the River of Grass Greenway shall be developed and constructed in consultation with the Miccosukee Indian Tribe of Florida.
